Need more reasons to cut back on your television viewing?  Consider these statistics from the TV-Turnoff Network, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C.

  • The number of hours the average 1-year-old American child watches TV each week:  6  
    (The number of hours of TV per week that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends for children ages 2 and younger:  0)
  • The number of hours the average 2- to 17-year-old watches television each week:  19  
    (The number of hours per week spent watching TV that's been shown to affect academic achievement negatively:  10)
  • The percentage of Americans who always or often watch television while eating dinner:  40%
  • Percentage of 4- to 6-year-olds who would rather watch TV than spend time with their father:  54%
  • The number of TV commercials viewed by the average American child each year:  20,000
  • The number of violent acts the average American child sees on TV by age 18:  200,000
