What to Ask Your Child's First Doctor
When you interview a doctor, be sure to come prepared with a list of questions.  Here are a few to get you started:

  • Will you examine my child each time, or will other doctors examine him on a rotating basis? (If it's a group practice, you might want to meet the other doctors.)
  • How flexible are your hours?
  • Do you see patients at night and on weekends?
  • Will you respond to them, or will a nurse or nurse practitioner help handle them?
  • Are patients who have contagious diseases separated from other patients? (You don't want your baby to pick up germs in the waiting room.)
  • How can you be reached after hours? If you're in private practice, who covers if you're unavailable?
  • Which hospital are you affiliated with? Who would care for my child if he has to be admitted?
  • Will I be allowed to remain in the room if my child has to undergo a painful procedure?
  • Can you offer any advice on nonmedical issues, such as behavior problems?
  • What are your views about breastfeeding? Circumcision?
